Derek emigrated from England in 1973 to work on a large dairy farm north of Toronto. Over the next twenty years a shift in this operation to a market garden and eventually winery lead to Derek’s interest in winemaking. Southbrook Farms Winery began in 1991 and Derek began his winemaking career there. In 2000 Derek was awarded the Air Ontario Winemaker of the Year award. In 2001 Derek moved to Niagara to become winemaker and business partner at Lailey Vineyard Wines. In the summer of 2015 Lailey Vineyard Wines was sold and Derek moved his focus to making wines for Karlo Estate in Prince Edward County.
An innovator himself with a big-hearted personality and undeniable talent, Derek is a legend in the industry as he was the first to use Canadian Oak barrels while making extraordinary wines. He favours low-tech methods and relies heavily on his highly trained palate. Trusting his instincts is in keeping with the Karlo tradition. With painstaking attention to detail and commitment to excellence, Derek is dedicated to old world principles that make excellent wine.
